Aivasovsky Ivan Constantinovich (Russian) (1817-1900) :«View of the Ayu Dag, Crimea», oil on canvas, 21.6 x 28.6 cm : US $ 43,125 (Inclusive of buyer’s premium), March 8th 2000, Sotheby’s New York. Such works by Aivasovsky are much in demand and despite its small size, this exquisite painting went far beyond its top pre-sale estimate of $ 20,000.
«The rescue», oil on canvas dated 1866, 58.4 x 74.9 cm: US $ 170,750 (Inclusive of buyer’s premium), Sotheby’s New York, May 3rd 2000. Really a strong bid for this impressive and forceful painting, which carried a pre-sale estimate of between $ 70,000 and 100,000.
